Laptops with identical processors and RAM showed vastly different thermal profiles. Build quality, chassis design, and fan efficiency matter more than CPU/GPU specs. Budget models ($400-600) with good thermal design outperform premium models ($1000+) with poor cooling.
Throttling Starts at 85-95°C for Most Laptops
Performance degradation begins when CPU hits 85°C. Most gaming laptops hit this within 15-20 minutes of sustained work. Workstation laptops (Dell Precision, Lenovo ThinkPad P-series) maintain performance up to 95°C without throttling.
Sustained Performance Matters More Than Boost
Peak specs (turbo speeds) last 30-60 seconds. Real work involves sustained processing. A laptop that maintains steady 3.2GHz under load outperforms one that boosts to 4.5GHz then throttles to 2.8GHz.
